Since 2009, Harbour Haven has provided a welcoming environment where seniors receive thoughtful support while maintaining their sense of self.
Return HomeHarbour Haven was founded by Margaret Chen, a registered nurse who spent two decades working in various senior care settings across Ontario. Through those years, she observed how institutional environments, despite good intentions, often overlooked the individual preferences and routines that bring comfort to daily life. She envisioned something different – a residence that would feel less like a facility and more like a chosen home.
The property on Lakeshore Road, with its mature trees and proximity to the waterfront, seemed ideal for creating the kind of peaceful setting Margaret had in mind. The original building, a converted estate home, was carefully renovated to preserve its residential character while adding necessary accessibility features and safety systems. Each suite was designed with natural light and thoughtful layouts, avoiding the corridor-heavy feel common in larger facilities.
In the early years, Harbour Haven served just twelve residents. Margaret personally knew each person's morning preferences, favorite chair, and typical routines. As word spread among families seeking a more personalized approach to senior living, the residence gradually expanded. Additional wings were added in 2014 and 2018, each maintaining the same philosophy of comfort and individual attention that defined those first years.
Today, while Margaret has stepped back from daily operations, her original vision continues to guide every decision made at Harbour Haven. The focus remains on supporting each person's dignity, respecting their autonomy where possible, and creating genuine connections between residents, staff, and families.
All care staff hold current certifications in personal support work or nursing assistance. Regular training sessions cover dementia care approaches, fall prevention, medication safety, and person-centered communication. Staff-to-resident ratios are maintained to ensure adequate attention and response time.
Each resident's care plan is reviewed quarterly or more frequently if needs change. These assessments involve input from the resident when possible, family members, and healthcare providers. Documentation is maintained carefully to ensure continuity as staff shifts change.
The residence includes emergency call systems in all suites and common areas. Fire safety systems exceed provincial requirements. Medication management follows strict protocols with double-checking procedures. The secure memory care wing uses technology to prevent wandering while maintaining dignity.
Personal health information is handled according to Ontario's privacy legislation. Staff receive training on confidentiality and appropriate information sharing. Families have access to their loved one's care records while respecting the resident's right to privacy in personal matters.
Experienced professionals dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of care and creating a warm, supportive environment.

Every decision at Harbour Haven, from daily scheduling to major operational changes, is filtered through several core principles that have remained constant since our founding. These aren't merely aspirational statements but practical guidelines that inform how we interact with residents, families, and each other.
Dignity stands at the center of everything we do. This means respecting each person's right to make choices about their daily life where they're able, maintaining privacy during personal care, and never speaking about someone as if they weren't present. It means taking time to learn preferred names and titles, understanding cultural backgrounds, and honoring individual routines even when efficiency might suggest otherwise.
We recognize that moving to a residence often involves loss – of independence, familiar surroundings, sometimes cognitive abilities. Our role is to support people through these transitions with empathy rather than false cheerfulness. We acknowledge difficulties while working to create moments of genuine pleasure, connection, and meaning. Staff are trained to sit with discomfort rather than rushing to fix or dismiss it.
Communication happens on multiple levels at Harbour Haven. We maintain transparency with families about changes in condition, incidents, and care decisions. We listen actively when residents express concerns, even when those concerns relate to things we cannot change. We encourage feedback and use it to improve our practices. Regular family meetings and care conferences ensure everyone involved in a resident's wellbeing stays informed.
The concept of home goes beyond physical environment, though we work hard to create spaces that feel residential rather than clinical. It's also about relationships, routines, and a sense of belonging. We encourage residents to bring cherished possessions, display family photos, and arrange furniture according to personal preference. Meal times accommodate individual schedules rather than forcing everyone into rigid institutional timing. Staff get to know residents as people with histories, not merely as care recipients.
Safety and quality are non-negotiable, but we implement them in ways that minimize restrictions. Rather than eliminating all risk, we work with residents and families to understand acceptable levels of risk in exchange for independence and quality of life. A person who enjoys walking may have a wandering prevention system but isn't prevented from moving freely. Someone with swallowing difficulties receives appropriate texture modifications while still enjoying flavorful food.
Professional development ensures our team has current knowledge and skills. Staff participate in ongoing education about dementia care, palliative approaches, infection control, and communication techniques. We support certification renewals and encourage pursuit of additional qualifications. Experienced team members mentor newer staff, sharing not just procedures but the philosophy that makes Harbour Haven distinctive.
